Keynote: The Revolutionary Power of Bilingualism

The Revolutionary Power of Bilingualism is an inspiring keynote for educators of emergent bilingual learners. Karina reframes bilingualism as a powerful educational, cognitive, and cultural asset and challenges deficit-based views that limit students’ potential. She shares research, stories, and practical insights that highlight the unique strengths bilingual students bring, including creativity, resilience, and cognitive flexibility. This session invites educators to reflect on their beliefs and practices while offering strategies to affirm language, culture, and identity in the classroom. Attendees will leave motivated, equipped, and reminded that supporting bilingualism is more than good teaching. It is a transformative act that builds confident learners and a more equitable future.

Talk Before You Write: PK-5 Language and Writing Frameworks

Emphasis: Pre-K - 8th Grade

Writing is one of the most linguistically demanding tasks we ask students to do - particularly in bilingual and biliterate classrooms. When students are developing literacy in more than one language, intentional oral language, clear structure, and meaningful opportunities for academic talk are essential for strong writing development. This interactive session is intentionally designed around research-based practices aligned with the science of teaching reading and best practices in second-language acquisition. Participants will explore how oral language routines, language frames, and writing frameworks can work together to support sentence construction, cohesion, and idea development across languages. Educators will experience classroom-ready strategies and examine how writing frameworks serve as reusable scaffolds—providing structure without giving answers—so students can independently apply academic writing patterns in both English and Spanish. Participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately use to strengthen biliteracy and support writing across PK–5 classrooms.
